Now there's a real boatanchor....

So, does anyone have a re-tube kit available for this or do you have to
search the world (most tubes now being manufactured in the orient) buying
them individually?

All of the tubes in the R-390 are common military types which you can buy
at a place like Antique Electronics Supply or Triode Electronics, except
for the ballast tube which has become a rarity.

But, the tubes in that receiver should last a lifetime because they are
not very stressed at all. I would not just go and swap out all the tubes
for no apparent reason. Go ahead and test them, but don't expect to find
anything out of tolerance other than the power tube on the audio deck.

The tubes are actually the least of your worry on that thing, and alignment
is a nightmare. My inclination is to just send it off to Chuck Rippel who
specializes in those things and let him deal with it. He does beautiful
work.

The audio quality on that fake BC-342 is a whole lot better than the R-390
will ever be, although I can recommend the Electric Radio retrofit audio deck
for the R-390 which definitely cleans things up a lot. Still, the tight
skirts on the mechanical filters are not conducive to a pleasant listening
experience on MW.

Thanks, Bill. I went to the big hamfest at Friedrichshafen last Summer.
I stopped by Baumholder for a quick visit. I hardly recognized anything.
Damn Army changed everything in only 50 years!
